For every place I visit there are at least two more that end up on my ever-expanding list of places I want to go. I’ve by no means been everywhere, but as Susan Sontang once said, it’s on my list. On this page you’ll find a list of all the countries and territories I’ve visited, together with links to any articles on Indiana Jo that relates to that place (links coming soon).
Why countries AND territories
My list below is based on the countries and territories listed on the Travelers Century Club website. You’ll find it’s a little longer than the generally accepted list of 195 countries in the world. That’s for good reason.
First of all, I agree with that website – some territories are quite distinct from their ‘mainland’ counterparts – Hawaii and the British Virgin Islands are good examples. To quote their website, “This list has widespread recognition as the standard of countries and territories that are of significant interest, as distinct destinations, to serious travelers.“
Also, while I’m not a ‘country collector’, I would one day like to join the Traveler Century Club to get access to their member guides and group benefits. So, that’s why I’m counting against that list. When I hit 100, I’m submitting my membership application.
How many places have I visited?
The short answer is 75 countries and territories across 6 out of the 7 continents (I have yet to make it to Antarctica).
What not’s included
Any country or territory where I haven’t left the airport. I’ve also got some excellent articles on the website from other bloggers I’ve worked with. But, if they visited instead of me, I haven’t included it on this list.

what about travelling to Northern Germany, Denmark or Sweden? I live in northern Germany near the danish border.
We have the Baltic Sea and the North Sea with the famous “Wattenmeer” with a lot a small islands. It’s three hours by car from my place to Kopenhagen in Denmark and Malmö in Sweden. Both cities are very beautiful, they are connected by a very impressive bridge.
Hamburg is 60 miles away from my place and a very beautiful city, too!

I saw you have visited my country, Indonesia. It’s interesting to read travel bloggers’ opinion about my country: the highs and lows, the food, nature, and culture. Another reason to visit Indonesia again? Hope to be able to read it in the future. Good luck.
Thanks and I’m giving serious thought to be visiting Indonesia at the beginning of next year. If I do, I’ll certainly write about it.
It is said “If you love the Galapagos, you won’t go there”. I guess it has to do with keeping them pristine.
Nancy, I’d not heard that before but it’s a beautiful sentiment. Weirdly the Galapagos have never really appealed so, for now at least, I will be helping to keep them pristine.
Dont forget Turkey,Most famous city in world istanbul city,Cappadocia.Ephesus,Black Sea,Antalya,bodrum,Marmaris,troy,selcuk,etc many of city and a lot town in turkey you should go travel to turkey someday you will love it so nice people and has great cultures,if you go there let me know,l will advise best place in turkey..l used work hotels and travel agent in istanbul/
Ah, Nicola – you’re making me want to hop on a flight to Turkey! I have visited but really only to the beach resorts. I need to explore more of the country and definitely get to the places you mention. Thanks for your details/ I’ve removed your email from the comments in case the evil internet spam bots find it and start bothering you but I’ve made a note and will drop you a line when I next get to Turkey!
I am originally from Turkey and I do recommend a long visit there but I suggest delaying your visit until dangerous political situation in Turkey changes. South and Southeast are out for the time being. Istanbul may be OK right now and the regular touristic sites like Bodrum may also be OK. Cappadocia should be safe and quiet. Still, I am recommending my friends to stay away!
Savas, thanks for the tip. A long trip through Turkey is still on my to-do list. I’ve only ever travelled through Istanbul airport, though I have visited some of the beach areas. I hope that you keep safe and I that the political situation can be solved quickly and calmly.
Galapagos Islands was the best place I’ve ever been in all of the americas, better than amazon, inca trail , salt flats in Bolivia, Rio de Janeiro. Also, el mundo perdido based on the film ‘up’ or Roraima , southern Venezuela bordering Brazil , flat top mountains, amazing scenery and when your on top you can see Guyana, brazil and venezuela in all directions – if your brave enough to go there. Finally, you should visit Desierto de Tatacoa near Neiva or San Augustin in Colombia , where not many gringas venture, mucho suerte.
Jason, I don’t know why I have a mental block about the Galapagos. Not a single person has said a bad thing about the islands but still I don’t have the urge to go. The other places you mention in South America, I really enjoyed (so maybe I should take the hint about Galapagos!) Venezuela, I’m a bit nervous about visiting – how was it on the safety front? Every time I watch ‘Up’ I find myself looking at flights 🙂 And Desierto de Tatacoa – wowsers – why didn’t I know that place before I visited Colombia. I wasn’t planning on going back there but maybe I just have to. Gracias!!
Interesting, we’ve been to about the same number of countries. I’ve been to 51 so far but looking at your list, you have 21 countries I haven’t been to. Which means to say I also have a lot you haven’t been to. The top of my list would be Tanzania. You can get both beautiful animal watching, hiking up the tallest mountain in Africa and amazing beach time by Zanibar all within a relatively short distance from each other. I thought South Africa was beautiful. If only they could get rid of the crime in the cities. Cape Town, the northern wine country and the southern tip and beaches is a good choice. I saw the notes on Guyana. It’s tough to get in there as they only have charter flights. I only ended up there because my flight from Brasil to Atlanta ended up there in an emergency when the plane engine caught on fire at night over the Amazon. But that’s another scary, crazy story all its own. Have fun in Columbia
What about going to Guyana? I’m from there and I think you would enjoy what the country has to offer.
Nykke, there are so many places I want to go to and Guyana is definitely on the list…in fact, I’ll hopefully be travelling to Colombia in the next few months. So maybe…any tips for me for what to see if I make it there?
That’s awesome! the main attractions are Kaieteur Waterfalls, Shell Beach (people come to see the turtles), if you got to the Interior you can see authentic huts that the Amerindians still live in today and they could probably teach you how to Cassava bread (really yummy when toasted with butter). We have resorts too, the most famous one is Splashmin’s which a water park. The other resorts are more “naturey” and peaceful and scenic like the Baganara Island resort. You can check out Castalani (I think I spelled it wrong) House, it’s where the first president of Guyana lived, it’s a mini museum of all his treasures from around the world. The Botanical Gardens right next door to it is great too, there’s the memorial for President Burnham there and the Seven Pounds Monument, as well as the kissing bridge. You can maybe see a mantee in the water and feed them garden. However, I do not suggest going to the zoo, it’s gone down hill and there isn’t much to look at in there these days. You can go walking on the seawalls, which used to be big on Sundays but I think they got rid of “Sunday Lime” on the seawalls.
I think that’s it as far as my knowledge goes on “touristsy” things to do there.
